In this module we explore how human physiological function and performance is affected by environmental conditions. This will include seasonal and socio-geographical environmental stresses and air travel. By the end of this module, students should have an understanding of how humans both influence and are able to adapt to environmental s challenges.
In this module, students will learn about the effects of timing on psychophysiological factors relating to sports and exercise performance. Each topic will be covered in an introduction lecture.
Students will collect data in practical sesions in the sports science laboratories. Data are then collated and alaysed in IT laboratory practicsl. Students then use these data to complete their coursework assessment - a 3000 word scientific paper format report.
Your coursework and feedback will help you critically evaluate time-of-day effecets on physiological and psychological performance. Support sessions will helpyou to develop your critical thinking and scientific writing skills.
To pass this module students need to be able to:
1) Discuss the influences of seasonal factors on physiology from birth through to adulthood.
2) Discuss how date-of-birth influences sporting success and educational outcomes
3) Critically evaluate evidence for the effects of circadian rhythms, diurnal variation, and jet lag on exercise performance
4) Report quantitative inferential statistics in APA format and demonstrate an understanding of measures of effect size.
