Module description

This module introduces students to core concepts of neurological physiotherapy, allowing students to explore the role of Physiotherapy in the management of patients from different age groups and populations, with medical and surgical conditions, both in the acute and non-acute settings. Students will develop their assessment, clinical reasoning and treatment intervention skills for this group of patients. The impact of psychosocial and diversity issues on rehabilitation will be considered.

Module aims

This module aims to introduce students to the management of common neurological disorders experienced by service users across their lifespan. Students will consider the patho-physiological, behavioural and functional changes associated with these neurological pathologies and a wide range of assessment and treatment approaches and their rationale.
To further develop students understanding of professional physiotherapy practice and continue to build more of an understanding the core values and beliefs of the profession.
To introduce students to the key concepts in neurological physiotherapy including;
* A sound level of knowledge and understanding of anatomical, biomechanical and pathophysiological process of the neurological systems.
* Identification, understanding and evaluation of patient’s problems or potential problems through the individualised assessment of neurology patients and providing opportunities for students to critically explore objective measures as indicators of health and illness.
* A basic understanding of the neurological treatment options providing opportunities for students to critically evaluate the evidence base for those treatment options.
To identify and discuss individual patient needs and how they may potentially benefit from physiotherapy taking into account their psychological, cultural, social and environmental factors and their influence on functional ability and the biological, physical and behavioural sciences which underpin physiotherapy.

Module learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module, the student will be able to:

1. Describe the normal anatomy and physiology of the Neurological systems and discuss how pathological changes and their subsequent medical management can alter Neurological functions and impact upon the patient.
2. Demonstrate appropriate, safe and effective assessment processes leading to a clinically reasoned identification of the patient’s problems, goals and management plan, in line with professional standards
3. Justify and demonstrate the use of appropriate, safe and effective treatment techniques for identified individual patient problems.
4. Explore the impact of psychosocial, ethical and cultural factors in the management of patients with neurological disorders
5. Discuss the role of the physiotherapist as part of the MDT in the management of neurological disorders in a range of patient groups and healthcare settings.

Learning and teaching methods

The module will combine a number of different teaching approaches. There will be skills-focused practical sessions, including the use of simulated practice and case based scenarios, group work/role play demonstrations, and videos. Problem based learning groups will be used to explore realistic examples, relating theory and practice around more common Neurological conditions and problems. On occasion, whole group lectures will introduce key concepts. Lectures by module lead Supervised EBL group work on common Neurological conditions; Learning of specific Anatomy, Physiology and pathologies related to the EBL subjects will be expected. General revision time has been allocated within the module, in preparation for assessment. Discussion forums will be expected to be accessed to enable effective problem based group learning. Additional resources will be available via Moodle, to enhance student learning, these include teaching material, mandatory training courses, online discussion forums, anatomy quizzes etc.Journals and e books are available through the university library. Access to professional resources such as the CSP and CSPs online e-portfolio and HCPC resources are available to students online. Personal tutorials can be arranged with the module lead at any time, with prior notice. The timetable allows for a tutor led revision session of practical skills, for students to access prior to assessment. The student will undertake instruction, and practice, on a number of Physiotherapeutic approaches relating to the Neurology patient. Appropriate professional documentation will also be taught throughout this module, with formative feedback provided weekly. Pre assessment practical work will be facilitated in class, via fictional patient scenarios.

Additional coursework information

Students will undertake an unseen examination (1 hour) of a case scenario. Coursework: reflective account of clinical decision making suggested in the examination which will include the impact of psychosocial and cultural factors on the management of the case scenario and the role of the physiotherapist within the MDT.
