Module description

This module will give students knowledge and understanding of the academic skills required for life-long learning in physiotherapy. This will include critical thinking and academic skills such as searching, retrieving, appraising and reporting evidence to allow to students to begin to engage with evidence-based practice.

Module aims

1. To introduce students to evidence-based practice and life-long learning in physiotherapy.
2. To gain knowledge and understanding of critical thinking.
3. To develop academic skills such as searching, retrieving, appraising and reporting evidence.

Module learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module, the student will be able to:
1. Identify, retrieve and make judgements on sources of information;
2. Communicate conclusions effectively;
3. Demonstrate an understanding of the value in using a variety of sources of information in practice;
4. Discuss the concept of evidence-based practice in healthcare

Module information

Indicative Content:
Academic skills and referencing.
Measurement in physiotherapy (quantitative research methods).
Critical thinking and clinical reasoning.
Hierarchy of evidence and the value of all sources of information.
Literature searching.
Evidence based practice.
Appreciation of uncertainty.
Qualitative research methods.
