Module description

This module introduces students to sports therapy, placing it within the context of healthcare in the UK and within other health care delivery systems.

Module aims

This module introduces students to the practice of sports therapy. Professionalism and ethics related to sports therapy are explored and the obligations and responsibilities of working as a sports therapist examined. Communication and the use of interpersonal skills to collect information are explored. The importance of record keeping is discussed. First aid and remedial sports massage techniques are learned. The concept of the reflective practitioner is introduced.

Module learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module, the student will be able to:

1. Describe the development of sports therapy and its place in the delivery of healthcare
2. Explore the concept of professionalism and reflective practice within sports therapy
3. Use appropriate communication skills to undertake a subjective assessment and record it appropriately
4. Select and demonstrate a range of massage techniques
5. Deliver first aid in a sporting environment having obtained a recognised first aid qualification

Module information

The module provides the students with the necessary underpinning knowledge and fundamental skills to become a sports therapist. Assessments focus on the students being able to demonstrate the required knowledge base to become a sports therapist.

Learning and teaching methods

A range of learning and teaching methods will be used supported by the use of moodle.
