Our mission statement

Our mission is to provide our students with a distinctive and stimulating business school education that is underpinned by innovative social scientific research. We are ambitious, and believe in a culture of intelligent enquiry that encourages both staff and students to take intellectual risks while maintaining a strong sense of social responsibility. In doing so, we aim for our students to graduate with the knowledge, skills and integrity to flourish in a global marketplace, making a positive impact on both their employing organisations and society.

Committed to sustainable management

In the aftermath of the economic crisis, the world needs responsible business leaders to drive sustainable growth. We’re taking a stand against reckless managers who maximise short term returns and later wreck the organisations they're entrusted with. At EBS, we give you the knowledge and skills to manage effectively, so organisations can work better and compete in increasingly challenging markets. We're proud to work in the UK's first zero carbon business school building at our Colchester Campus and are committed to the UN Principles of Responsible Management Education (PRME).

A challenging business education

You learn from practitioners and world-leading academics, working to solve business challenges across the globe. Our courses combine academic thoroughness with real-world issues, using creative and analytical teaching approaches to explain the fundamentals of business and management. We teach you how to analyse complex information, demonstrate clarity of thought and present arguments concisely, so you gain the skills valued by employers and secure your dream career.

Global perspectives

At EBS, you build a lifelong network of international contacts. You work with students and staff from a range of cultures and nationalities and our teaching explores business practices in both established and emerging economies. We help you to develop a global mindset for an international business career.

Research that makes a global impact

Our eight research centres challenge inequality and business injustices, such as tax avoidance and gender prejudice, and explore important issues like accounting in emerging economies. We push the boundaries of knowledge and question the status quo to help organisations innovate and thrive. We’re in the UK’s top 25 for research excellence (REF,2014) and 95% of our research is internationally recognised. EBS is part of the University’s Faculty of Social Science, ranked fourth in the UK (REF, 2014), and our research is informed by a broad range of social science theories. We’re home to several leading journal editors and our work is frequently cited in the national press, the Bank of England, the European Central Bank and the Federal Reserve.

Working with business

We have strong connections with leading organisations in the public, private and third sector. Our Advisory Board features representatives from some of the world’s top brands, such as BP, Rolls Royce and HSBC, helping to shape our curriculum to the needs of employers across the world.
