At Essex we take your employability very seriously. It is something we believe to be part of becoming a rounded individual. We will help you acquire the qualities you need to succeed, whatever your plans.

The Essex Graduate

Through your time with us we expect you to become:

  • enterprising and prepared for your future
  • able to creatively apply your understanding to enrich the wider world
  • globally engaged and ethically aware
  • scholarly and equipped for life-long learning

We term this package of qualities and capabilities that come from living and learning in one of the most international diverse campuses in the world – 'The Essex Graduate'.

Our Employability Strategy

Our whole University is involved in employability, as part of our Employability Strategy. You will find that your department has academics who work with our Employability and Careers Centre to inform you about employability activities and opportunities to go overseas for study or work placements, while each faculty has a Faculty Employability Coordinator to find degree-related work placements.

Essex has one of the most active Students’ Unions in the UK. Each year over 700 students formally volunteer, while more than 4,000 get involved in sports, clubs and societies.

What you can do

There are so many ways you can grow as a person and gain new skills that will look good on your CV.
These include:

  • each year around 300 students gain paid placements within the University through our original frontrunners scheme
  • undertaking a diverse range of extra-curricular graduate level paid internships offered by a central unit
  • the popular Essex Apprentice event (run by our Students’ Union each year), and the two day enterprise Boot Camp (run by our Employability and Careers Centre)
  • opportunities within your department to develop discipline specific skills as part of your studies

We will also help you understanding the skills you have gained, and knowing how to demonstrate these to an employer.
For example, you can:

  • gain an extra-curricular employability award – the Big Essex Award - which will be recorded on your degree transcript
  • benefit from one-to-one expert advice on career opportunities and job seeking
  • use the Essex CV and Application packs – a suite of high quality guides on applying for work
  • learn from famous entrepreneurs and take part in enterprise workshops
  • study employability as part of your degree
  • meet leading employers through on-campus workshops and recruitment fairs

Employability at Essex is about putting all of the different aspects of your university experience together and asking the question: where do I want to go with my life?

We provide you with ways to develop your employability through fantastic opportunities and give you the tools to explore the personal meaning of your unique experiences so you are ready for your future.
