Study with us

PG funding

Postgraduate funding

We offer scholarships and bursaries to support talented postgraduates, ranging from research council studentships and University of Essex scholarships to awards funded by charities and other external organisations.

We give you the opportunity to study a challenging course within a research-intensive and supportive environment. You develop knowledge in your chosen area and learn from some of the top academics in the field. A wide range of taught courses are available, while our research courses cover many different areas.

The postgraduate community

Our courses are demanding and enjoyable with the multi-disciplinary environment enabling courses to provide targeted training in specialist areas of biological science. Staff and students work closely with each other, while the open door policy that operates in our laboratory facilities and common room allows you to collaborate and seek advice easily.

Leading research

Research is at the centre of what we do and is led by our academic staff who have expertise in a variety of subjects. In the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE, December 2008), 85 per cent of our research was rated as being of internationally recognised quality. We receive funding for research from the UK government, medical charities and the European Union (EU). Our strong focus on research means you are taught by some of the best academics in your chosen subject. They are passionate about what they do and are driven to help you succeed.

Preparing for your future

We aim to ensure that you are ready to pursue your chosen career when you leave us. Support is available from our Employability and Careers Centre and through our Faculty Employability Co-ordinator. We work to make sure you have the skills employers are looking for, like practical knowledge of working in a laboratory or the ability to collate and analyse data. Our students' experience was reflected in the last National Student Survey for 2012, where we achieved 91 per cent overall satisfaction.

Transferable employability skills for PhD graduates are critical, as they enable you to work effectively within industry as well as academia. Successful researchers think carefully and strategically about their skills, objectives, and the areas in which they need to develop, and take charge of their own professional skills development.

Proficio is the University’s new student service designed to provide doctoral researchers with unique opportunities to acquire a set of specialist professional skills and deepen and expand their subject knowledge, at all stages of their career.
