Module description

This module is a practical introduction to the technical aspects of theatre including basic sound and lighting techniques, and stage management.

The approach is practical and is designed to equip students to be able to use the sound and lighting equipment in the Lakeside Theatre and Studio.

This module will enable students to design and programme lights; to create a basic sound design, and to stage manage a show.

Module aims

The aims of the module are:
1, To introduce students to the fundamental principles of stage lighting and sound design for the theatre
2. To enable students to apply and practice the basics of stage management
3. To stage a show safely and effectively in the Lakeside Theatre with an understanding of and basic competence in sound, lighting and stage management.
4. To understand and comply with the basic principles of Health and Safety and professional conduct within a theatre building.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of the module students will be able to:

1. Rig and programme a basic lighting and sound design, under appropriate supervision
2. Analyse and critique the fundamental principles of lighting and sound design
3. Stage manage a show effectively
4. Describe and apply basic principles of stage craft and theatre production, using appropriate technical and professional vocabulary

For 2020-21, we will offer a mixture of tailored online, digital, and campus-based teaching where it may be possible and as appropriate, along with personalised one-to-one consultation with academic staff.
