Grammar Skills is a support module aimed at students with English as an additional language.
The classes focus on the specific areas of grammar that the students need to improve. An initial needs analysis will determine the particular grammar areas that require further study. Class work will involve, where necessary, a review of fundamentals, leading to a great deal of controlled and free practice.
The module covers the following areas:
1. prepositions
2. use of tenses
3. cleft sentences and inversion
4. relative clauses
5. adverbials

The module consists of weekly 2-hour classes. The classes are designed to give plenty of opportunity for guided and freer practice of grammar.
Catch-up materials and further resources are available on Moodle. Students are strongly recommended to study these materials, particularly if they are unable to attend a lesson.
Students are also recommended to make use of the workshops offered by Skills for Success to support upskilling and development in the areas of Academic Skills, English Language and Maths/Statistics which can be booked through CareerHub. Exam format definitions
- Remote, open book: Your exam will take place remotely via an online learning platform. You may refer to any physical or electronic materials during the exam.
- In-person, open book: Your exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may refer to any physical materials such as paper study notes or a textbook during the exam. Electronic devices may not be used in the exam.
- In-person, open book (restricted): The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may refer only to specific physical materials such as a named textbook during the exam. Permitted materials will be specified by your department. Electronic devices may not be used in the exam.
- In-person, closed book: The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may not refer to any physical materials or electronic devices during the exam. There may be times when a paper dictionary,
for example, may be permitted in an otherwise closed book exam. Any exceptions will be specified by your department.
