Module description

Academic Speaking Skills is a support module aimed at students with English as an additional language.

The module forms part of the Skills for Success Academic English Support provision and is suitable for both undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Module aims

The classes give guided practice in general seminar discussion skills and more formal oral presentation skills. No degree credits are associated with these classes.

Module learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module a student will demonstrate:

1. ability to express opinions and respond to the opinions of others

2. knowledge of a range of techniques for effective presentations

3. ability to use this knowledge to deliver presentations effectively

4. ability to understand the difference between personal opinion and academic argument

5. knowledge of a range of techniques for achieving a successful discussion

6. ability to develop, present and support an argument.

Learning and teaching methods

The module consists of weekly 1-hour classes . The classes are very practical in nature and designed to give you plenty of opportunity for informal, guided practice. Catch-up materials and further resources are available on Moodle. Students are strongly recommended to study these materials, particularly if they are unable to attend a lesson. Students are also recommended to make use of the workshops offered by Skills for Success to support upskilling and development in the areas of Academic Skills, English Language and Maths/Statistics which can be booked through CareerHub.
