Module description

Building upon the statistics knowledge gained in your first year this module combines statistics lectures with computer workshops. You will be taught the data analysis skills and underlying principles needed to carry out a range of statistical tests. We will be focusing on Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and Multiple Linear Regression, which together cover most data analysis techniques used in psychological research. After discussing single factor ANOVA designs (both between- and within-subjects) we will move on to factorial designs and interaction: an important concept when interpreting complex experimental designs.

Module aims

By the end of this module, you should be able to begin to think critically about some decisions in research situations, such as:
1/ What is the best way to design a study given your specific research question?
2/ What are the characteristics of your data set? What is your sample like?
3/ What statistical tests should you use in order to determine if your study “worked”?
4/ What should you conclude about your study from the results of your statistical tests?

Module learning outcomes

The specific learning outcomes are as follows:
1/ Understand and know when to use the different basic statistical tests common in psychological science
2/ Be more confident and capable of comfortably manipulating and graphing data in Excel, and analyzing data using SPSS
3/ Be able to use statistics to communicate your own research findings

Learning outcomes 2 and 3 will be assessed by the computer-based assignments. Learning outcome 1 will be assessed in both the computer-based assignments and the exam.

Module information

Lectures start on the hour. Please arrive promptly to avoid disrupting the class. There will be a short break halfway through the class. Please ask questions during class if there is anything that is unclear. You will be expected to participate in classroom activities designed to support your learning.

Learning and teaching methods

The module consists of 10 lectures each lasting 2 hours. Each will cover data analysis skills, along with their underlying principles, which will equip you for most of the laboratory class and project work that you will encounter in the rest of your psychology degree. There will also be 10 computer workshops (labs) each lasting 1.5 hours. These will give you a supervised opportunity to solve exercises using statistical software, and the chance to ask questions about any aspects of the topics covered in the lectures.
