Module description

This module provides an opportunity for students to explore, reflect and learn about the limits and opportunities in applying psychoanalytic concepts to the study of organisations.

Module aims

The aims of this module are:The aims of this module are:



  • To consider and evaluate the relevance and the limits of psychoanalytic thinking for understanding organisations.

  • To discern and explore the connections between psychoanalytic, CMT (critical management theory), and experiential  understanding of organizations.

  • To develop participants' reflexivity in taking up organisational roles.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of the module, students will be expected to be able to:



  1. Demonstrate reflexivity in taking up organisational roles.

  2. Demonstrate insight into organisational dynamics, through reflection and analysis of organisational experience.

  3. Critically explore the limits of management and psychoanalytic models and practices.

  4. Conduct a discussion about organisational life from both a psychoanalytic and critical management angle, which can be demonstrated in an essay.

Module information

The Theory seminars are based primarily on organisational case studies, and the theory underpinning the Group Relations Conference.


The Work Discussion seminars to which students will make presentations based on course learning. Two of these seminars will also include reflective groups as part of the preparation and review of the Group Relations Conference.


The residential Group Relations Conference is a 2-day learning event in which students have opportunities to explore the emotional culture of teams, the dynamics authority and power, and the nature of role taking and giving.

Learning and teaching methods

This module will be delivered via:

  • Participation in the University of Essex Group Relations Conference: A 2 day learning event.
  • Four 1-hour Work Discussion seminars.
  • Four 2-hour Theory seminars.
