FDA LX51 Therapeutic Communication and Therapeutic Organisations
A substantial component of this Foundation Degree is based on your own practice in your workplace. You will continue with your normal work responsibilities and will be bringing your learning to your workplace mentor. Your mentor will help you apply your learning to your work, and will review various aspects of your overall work experience, in the light of your learning on the course. You will keep a learning journal throughout the course and use this as an aid memoire for your weekly meetings with your mentor. Your mentor will keep a brief record of these meetings and also think with you about your performance across a range of areas.
The meetings do not contribute to your grade for the degree scheme, however, you must pass this module overall before completing the programme. You can pass the module by bringing your learning back to the mentor and workplace thoughtfully and by demonstrating a growing capacity to apply this in your work setting.
As in PA120-4-FY Work-based Learning, you need to choose, early in the academic year, the individual who will be the focus of your case study. Please consult your mentor and tutor if this presents difficulties in your role.
The aims of the module are:
* To link theory to everyday working practice
* To utilise your mentor to support you in bringing your learning into the organisation.
An advanced capacity to:
* utilise a mentor to support learning
* communicate effectively with colleagues and with clients
* apply theory to practice
* work effectively in an institutional setting, in which collaboration is the basic aim as well as therapeutic process
* understand how to practice psychodynamically from within one's role in the organisation
* consider clients collaboratively and to develop therapeutic strategies
* adopt a reflective attitude in the workplace
* understand of how a psychodynamic way of thinking can be applied to a single client
* learn through practice, which is at the heart of the programme
There is no additional reading for this module as it draws on the learning from all other modules in the course.
* Weekly work-based meetings with mentor
* Working practice in role and related activities, under mentor's supervision
* Theoretical linkage and reflection on work experience within and across seminars, but especially in relation to observations (for the Case Study) and reflective groups
* Seminars on case study and reflective report writing
There will be seminars to support you in your writing of your case study.

The coursework consists of one 2500 word Case Study and one 2500 word Reflective Report.
Exam format definitions
- Remote, open book: Your exam will take place remotely via an online learning platform. You may refer to any physical or electronic materials during the exam.
- In-person, open book: Your exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may refer to any physical materials such as paper study notes or a textbook during the exam. Electronic devices may not be used in the exam.
- In-person, open book (restricted): The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may refer only to specific physical materials such as a named textbook during the exam. Permitted materials will be specified by your department. Electronic devices may not be used in the exam.
- In-person, closed book: The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may not refer to any physical materials or electronic devices during the exam. There may be times when a paper dictionary,
for example, may be permitted in an otherwise closed book exam. Any exceptions will be specified by your department.
