FDA LX51 Therapeutic Communication and Therapeutic Organisations
This module connects your theory and observational seminars with your work-based practice. It is designed around clinical vignettes which illustrate the complexities and pathologies of human and organisational dynamics and interrelationships.
Some vignettes will be peer-reviewed journal articles, some will be anecdotal but from professional sources and some will be first-hand DVD diaries of Looked After Children (LAC) relating their experiences of being in care. They will cover both one-to-one work, group work and organisational problems which can be ordinarily faced working in caring, educational and therapeutic organisations. The content therefore will be avowedly human and interactional.
Each week you will log-on to Moodle and read a short vignette. Then, through a series of 'prompt question' on each vignette your tutor will invite observations, responses, comments and speculations from you on vignette. You will write a response to the questions on a word document and then upload this to Moodle. You should examine the vignettes in the light of your leaning in your theory seminars and in relation to your specific role and client group. You will be 'in the analyst's chair', in other words, having to think through in apparent isolation the myriad of possible and actual ways in which the child or young person might be functioning in an anti-developmental way and what therapeutic endeavours might be necessary to help them adapt to their circumstances.
Just like an ordinary seminar, you will be able to see, read and respond to the evolving discussion with your seminar group. It will be helpful to take some notes in your Reflective Journal and discuss the vignettes with your mentor at weekly mentor meetings.
This module runs for 20 weeks over the Autumn and Spring Terms. You will have at least one face to face seminar with your tutor to review the module and prepare for assignments. For further details see Moodle.

2. To integrate your learning on the course by linking the moodle material to theory, observation seminars and work-based learning experience.
3. To consider a range of practice issues related to your responsibility and professional role.
By the end of the module students should be able to:
1. Recognise and discuss a wide range of professional practice issues and dilemmas
2. Make cogent connections between theory, practice and responsibility
3. Produce a clear, concise, evidenced written response to a professional practice issue
4. Utilize and apply psychodynamic concepts to vignettes
5. Demonstrate an awareness of the implicit and underlying processes and dynamics involved in a range of practice situations
