Module description

The quantitative methods sessions will be useful to all students who wish to analyse data statistically, either for their MA or for their PhD research. Students will work with data from real studies in applied linguistics using SPSS. These studies will exemplify typical research designs and questions.

The qualitative methods sessions will be useful to all students who wish to conduct qualitative or mixed-methods research. They will give students information and advice about interviewing and qualitative data coding.

Module aims

No information available.

Module learning outcomes

1. judge which statistical analysis suits their data
2. conduct various kinds of statistical analyses
3. understand SPSS output files
4. report the results of their statistical analyses
5. select appropriate research methods for a given set of research questions
6. appreciate the strengths and weaknesses of various qualitative methods
7. reduce qualitative data and code them.

Module information

1 - Descriptive statistics; How to write a research proposal
2 - Correlation
3 - Single regression; Tutorial on descriptive statistics and correlation
4 - Multiple regression
5 - t-test and ANOVA
6 - Qualitative interviewing I; Tutorial on ANOVA
7 - Qualitative interviewing II
8 - Introduction to data handling and coding
9 - Coding
10 - Quality and Reviewing in qualitative research: reliability, validity and generalizability

Learning and teaching methods

10 2-hour lectures and 2 2-hour tutorials. In the lectures, there will be a fair number of practical tasks done in groups and discussed in class. The tutorials aim to offer students practice with SPSS and more information on the statistical techniques introduced in the lectures. A two-hour tutorial will be given in the third and sixth weeks, in addition to the lecture given per week. Students are required to attend all sessions of the module (that is, the quantitative and qualitative methods lectures and the tutorials).
