Module description

This module will offer experienced English teachers the chance to reflect on their teaching experiences and career by considering their own and their learners' needs, different teaching contexts as well as goals and outcomes. Through small-group discussions and input sessions, students will become familiar with theories of reflexivity and their importance for improved classroom practice.


Aims
The aims of the module are:
1. To familiarise students with theories of reflection and reflexivity in education and language teaching.
2. To highlight the link between theory, reflective practice and improved classroom practice.
3. To encourage students to reflect on their own teaching (e.g. critical incidents, problems, ways to overcome them etc.).


Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
1. Understand and appreciate the importance of reflective practice for improved classroom practice.
2. Consider their own concerns about teaching and how to address them.
3. Articulate these concerns and reflect on avenues for self-improvement and professional improvement.
4. Discuss reflections with peers and learn from each other's experiences.

Learning and teaching methods

The module will run over 10 weeks. There will be 10 contact hours in total, i.e. 1 X 2 hours every other week, and these will take the form of seminars and whole-group discussions. Students will be required to give an oral presentation in the last week of the spring term. Students will also have the opportunity to have individual tutorials with the module lecturers where they can ask for advice on their oral presentations and assignments/projects. All materials for the module will be uploaded in advance on Moodle.
