Module description

In this module we will explore phonetic and phonological aspects of rhythm and melody in spoken English. Topics include the inventory, description, and phonological representation of intonational patterns in standard English; rules for phrasal stress assignment; the relationship of prosody with meaning; and intonational variation among English accents, both L1 and L2.

Module aims

The aims of the module are:
• To introduce students to ways of describing and classifying intonational patterns in spoken English
• To explore and analyse intonational patterns in English speech data with the help of acoustic analysis software
• To consider the relationship between intonation and meaning (intended or perceived)

Module learning outcomes

By the end of the module, students should:
1. Understand the main descriptive parameters involved in studying the intonation of English sentences
2. Be able to characterise English intonational patterns in terms of both the British School and Autosegmental-Metrical theories
3. Be able to carry out objective analyses of intonation in recorded speech data using the computer programme Praat
4. Be able to explain native speakers' choices of intonation patterns with reference to meaning, information structure, and illocutionary force, and contrast these where applicable with variations in regional or L2 speech
