The module will provide a thorough introduction to audiovisual and multimodal text translation, helping students to develop technical skills in this specialised field and thus enhance their employability potential. Students will explore key theories and current trends in audiovisual translation, and will be able to apply their new knowledge in practical exercises in subtitling, dubbing and voice-over.
The aims of this module are the following:
• to provide students with an overview of key theoretical concepts and professional practices in Audiovisual Translation, and its relationship to translation issues in general;
• to provide students with critical awareness of the linguistic, social and cultural issues associated with Audiovisual Translation;
• to provide students with understanding of the constraints and creative possibilities associated with the various AVT modalities.
• to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to enable them to insert themselves successfully into the AVT professional world;
• to enable students to become proficient users of relevant specialist and open source software.
On successful completion of the module, you will be able to:
• demonstrate understanding of key theoretical concepts and professional practices in Audiovisual Translation, and its relationship to translation issues in general;
• demonstrate ability in identifying and successfully overcoming linguistic and cultural challenges in AVT.
• demonstrate understanding of the constraints and creative possibilities associated with the various AVT modalities.
• demonstrate knowledge of AVT technical and professional skills, and an understanding of how the industry operates;
• demonstrate ability to work with relevant specialist and open source software.
This module is compulsory for students enrolled in MA Translation & Professional Practice, and optional for students enrolled in MA Translation, Interpreting & Subtitling and MA Translation & Literature.
Two-hour lessons each week, combining lecture and practical work.
