This module is designed to help second year students cope successfully with their Year Abroad or to complete the curriculum of final year students (with Italian as a second or a third language). All participants to the classes are expected to achieve an Effective Operational Proficiency C1 level in Italian as described in the Common European Framework (CEFR). The classes are organised around the topics of the textbook Nuovo Magari B2 and material provided by Daniela. There will be three weekly sessions, including a conversation class and two language classes.
The overall aim of the module is to achieve proficiency equivalent to level C1 of the European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) in speaking, writing, reading and listening.
• Demonstrate the ability to write structured and coherent commentaries and deliver cohesive presentations.
• Demonstrate the ability to use vocabulary and formulaic sentences appropriately.
• Demonstrate the ability to report and summarise for the purpose of discussing and analysing.
• Demonstrate awareness of the register and varieties of spoken and written Italian (e.g. colloquial, narrative and academic) and use them appropriately.
• Demonstrate awareness of some aspects of Italian culture and enduring traditions (geo-political aspect of the peninsula, socio-history of the Italian language, stories of migration and notions of Art History).
Demonstrate the ability to analyse the content of the set book (Domenico Starnone, Scherzetto, Einaudi).
Some content-based classes will be organised around pre-recorded material.
The classes are organised around the topics of the textbook Nuovo Magari B2 and material provided by Daniela. There will be three weekly sessions, including sometimes a pre-recorded content-based video, and two language classes. When suitable, the video sessions wiil be made available on Moodle and will typically be between 15-20 minutes in length, depending on the topic. Students will have full control of the video. In 2021-2 there will be four content-based areas: la geografia dell'Italia, some aspects of migration (Autumn Term) and socio-historical issues of the Italian language and a selection of Art History examples from various periods and artists in the Spring Term. In the language classes, we will be refining and extending the study of vocabulary and structures with interactive practice activities. All the events above will require strictly regular attendance and commitment to be successful.
All the extra material and the recordings will be uploaded on the LA650 Moodle page but working on a copy of the textbook, Nuovo Magari B2, is essential.
Students are asked to read Scherzetto and we will complete during the second term and the Easter vacation work on the book finalised to a discussion for the VIVA (oral exam), when students will be asked to comment on what they have read.
