Module description

In this module, we are working towards level C1 language competency. We will look at current topics from different areas, e.g. the environment or technical innovations. We will work with different texts from the fields of journalism, science, literature and culture, in order to practice global and selective reading comprehension. The improvement of listening comprehension is of central importance in this course. We will practice specifically the application of difficult linguistic structures (e.g. genitive, passive circumlocutions, indirect speech, participle). We will work towards improving your oral communication skills by active participation in course discussions and debates: You tell, report and comment o and practice the relevant contextual expressions.

Module aims

The aims of this module are to:


• Prepare students for the year abroad in Germany
• introduce students to a variety of topics, including the environment, the history of
the German language, life in East and West Germany
• familiarize students with a variety of complex grammatical phenomena,
• to develop and improve oral and written presentation skills
• introduce students to reading contemporary German literature (3 novels, see reading list)

Module learning outcomes

By the end of the module students should be fluent in standard German (Exit Level C1).

• Reading: The learner can capture complex information of a general scientific text, to read detailed reports and to analyse reports in which contexts, opinions and points of view are discussed.
• Listening: The learner can understand lectures, talks, and reports in context of his studies. They can also follow extended speech and conversations, even if they are not clearly structured or when relationships are not expressed explicitly.
• Speaking: The learner can give clear, detailed descriptions to many general scientific topics of his fields of interest. They can explain a point of view on a topical issue. They can fluently, accurately, and effectively talk about a wide range of topics in a scientific way.
• Writing: The Learner can demonstrate a complex topic clearly and well-structured, while presenting different points of view, highlighting main ideas and illustrating arguments by detailed examples. Vocabulary and style vary depending on the type of text and topic.

Module information

Students will be able to study abroad if this module is taken and successfully completed as a 2nd year option in a 4-year degree.

Learning and teaching methods

There will be a balanced skills approach, with equal emphasis on speaking, writing, aural and textual comprehension. We will read an authentic novel, watch an authentic movie, and work with authentic websites. It is essential to attend and actively participate in classes at all times, submit homework regularly, interact with other students in pair and group work, and spend a minimum of 6 hours per week self-studying. The module consists of 3 contact hours per week for 21 weeks. In addition to face-to- face teaching (subject to Government regulations at the time), students have access to a varied range of E-learning materials which are integrated into the module.
