Module description

Dissertations offer the opportunity for in-depth study and analysis of a topic relevant to your Masters degree programme. They provide a ‘capstone’ to your post graduate studies to date, allowing you to draw together the knowledge and skills gained and demonstrate this within the field of research activity.

Module aims

The aims of this module are:

  • To provide an opportunity to draw together and build upon research knowledge and skills gained and apply these in the production of a dissertation project.

  • To provide an opportunity for students to demonstrate achievement against the ‘research’ capabilities as set out in the Multi-Professional Framework for Advanced Clinical Practice in England (Health Education England, 2017).

Module learning outcomes

By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an advanced understanding of the area of study.

  2. Conduct a literature search and audit/ service needs assessment.

  3. Present an appropriate critical analysis of material accessed following the literature search, audit, and service needs assessment.

  4. Show awareness of ethical considerations.

  5. Utilise analysis of data to identify a gap in knowledge, evidence, or service need.

  6. Present a proposal to address the identified gap in knowledge, evidence, or service need.

  7. Produce an appropriate methodology for the study to be undertaken.

  8. Draw conclusions and make recommendations for practice, including presentation of a dissemination strategy for the study proposed.

Module information

This module builds upon the knowledge, skills, and assignment activity that students on the Advanced Clinical Practice/ Practitioner programmes will have successfully undertaken in previous modules.

The Multi-Professional Framework for Advanced Clinical Practice in England (Health Education England, 2017) has ‘research’ as one of the 4 pillars that define the standard of skills and knowledge expected for people working as Advanced Clinical Practitioners.

This module has been designed to reflect the ‘research’ capabilities as set out in this framework.  This builds upon work already undertaken as part of the Masters programme in relation to the research and other pillars in the framework, and provides an opportunity for students to bring this together in one piece of work to evidence their achievement in this area.

Learning and teaching methods

Alongside guided activity in the introductory and group sessions, this module requires the student to undertake independent learning to review their research development to date, select and generate relevant material, and negotiate supervision and support as required to achieve the expectations of the assignment for this module.

Bibliography

The above list is indicative of the essential reading for the course.
The library makes provision for all reading list items, with digital provision where possible, and these resources are shared between students.
