FDSCB750 Oral Health Science
Developing study skills is a vital part of effective learning and encourages independent learning so that students are successful in academic study. This module aims to encourage students to be take responsibility for their own learning, identify learning styles and equip them with a range of skills to facilitate study in higher education.
1. To place the development of the role of the dental hygienist in the context of a learning continuum
2. To develop interpersonal and communication skills and enhance personal and professional effectiveness
At the end of the module, the students are expected to be able to:
1. Demonstrate the ability to engage with technology, particularly the effective and efficient use of information communication technology. Gather relevant information from a wide range of sources including electronic data relevant to health and social care practice.
2. Review own study skills, learning styles and personal strengths as the basis for setting goals for learning.
3. Make effective notes to aid understanding and retain knowledge
4. Write in a range of different styles for different audiences and purposes
5. Produce an appropriately referenced, academic essay on a work-related topic
6. Demonstrate understanding of communication as a human interaction and the barriers to effective communication
7. Initiate rapport, respond to non-verbal cues and establish effective communication with patients and other members of the health care team
8. Communicate in a manner that is consistent with relevant legislation, policies and procedures.
The module consists of taught sessions by clinical experts in the field of oral health science covering theoretical teaching, demonstration and learning from clinical work based placement. Teaching is evidence-based and linked to contemporary literature.
