Module description

This module develops skills in the areas of literature searching, reviewing and critiquing health and social care research.

Module aims

The aims of the module are:

1. To develop knowledge and critical understanding of the research process; different types of evidence and the implications for informing practice
2. To develop critical appraisal skills within the wider context of EBP
3. Develop a range of theoretical and practical appraisal skills

Module learning outcomes

1. Select appropriate critical appraisal tools and apply these to identify strengths/weaknesses and sources of methodological bias - including ethics in a
variety of research papers
2. Make informed judgements about the implications of different types of evidence for clinical decision making as part of EBP.

Module information

This module is part of the required programme for different programmes of study – all of which require knowledge and understanding of Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) to optimise decision making by emphasizing the use of evidence from well designed and conducted research. This framework prioritises scientific practice; requiring practitioners to possess a range of critical appraisal skills within a wider EBP context.
