Module description

This module provides the fundamental knowledge and skills for Registered Nurses to begin to practise as a Practice Nurse within Primary Care. It is suitable for nurses with current registration who wish to gain knowledge and skills e.g. those new to General Practice Nursing or those wishing to seek employment in General Practice Nursing.

Module aims

The module aims to:
• Develop knowledge in relation to fundamental Practice Nursing Skills (Immunisations, Cervical Cytology, Family Planning Appreciation, Wound Care.
• Develop knowledge in the fundamental assessment and maintenance of Long Term Conditions (Asthma / COPD / Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease)
• Develop patient assessment skills in a general practice setting
• Develop a critical awareness of contemporary issues in practice nursing and healthcare

Module learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module, the [learner] will be able to:

1. Identify and analyse the stages of a systematic patient assessment process in general practice

2. Identify and critically appraise the specific nursing interventions required in the management of selected long term conditions

3. Utilise advanced knowledge acquired to undertake specific nursing skills in relation to nursing in general practice

4. Demonstrate critical awareness and detailed knowledge of the bio psychosocial sciences to explain investigations and treatments and, drawing from this context, demonstrate ability to assist the patient to understand information provided to them by other health care professionals

Module information

Content:
* Introduction to general practice
* Consultation and assessment skills
* Coaching and motivational interviewing
* Legal and ethical issues in general practice including autonomous practice
* Family planning appreciation (2 days)
* Immunisations (2 days)
* Cervical cytology – preparation for practice (2 days)
* Overview of diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD and Asthma and Cardiovascular disease including NHS health check (2 Days)
* Mental Health first aid
* Wound care

There is a heavy emphasis on developing fundamental clinical skills in this module.

Learning and teaching methods

The module will combine a number of different teaching approaches. Lectures, workshops, skills session and online learning will be utilised. Individual tutorials, as negotiated between student and module lead will further support teaching and learning. Lectures will be delivered by module lead and other teaching staff, with expertise in the subjects being taught. Students are expected to undertake independent learning to supplement teaching. Interim student feedback will be collected, reviewed and where necessary actions taken mid-way through the module. Placement students are required to have a supervisor / assessor in clinical practice for completion of cervical cytology competence but this is NOT a requirement for achievement of the module. Learning will be supported by on-line resources to which the student will have access on and off campus. Each student will be allocated a personal tutor for this module, (usually the module lead). It is expected that students will meet with their personal tutor at least once during the module. It is the student's responsibility to arrange this.
