Module description

The registered nurse, in whatever work setting, has a significant role in managing resources, including people, time and physical resources. This module prepares students for their role as a leader and manager of nursing care in the clinical setting. It encourages students to see the wider sphere of health care policy in relation to clinical practice as a registered practitioner.

Module aims

To advance students’ ability to lead and manage the care of a group of patients/clients

• To advance students’ knowledge of health care policy through a review of current best evidence

• To advance students’ ability to work within a team

Module learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module, the [learner] should be able to:

1. With attention to the 6Cs, demonstrate the ability to identify and prioritise the competing needs of patients/clients in relation to the availability of resources. (Unseen test)

2. Demonstrate effective group working, such as ability to delegate duties to others, motivate colleagues and co-ordinate the collective efforts of the multidisciplinary team to ensure quality patient care and co-ordinated discharge and/or referral (Unseen test)

3. Critically evaluate the contributions of policies, national standards and service frameworks to the development and delivery of local health and social care services plans (Unseen test)

4. Reflect upon own and others’ leadership and show how effective leadership can positively impact on the quality of care patients/clients receive. (Unseen test)

5. Demonstrate the importance of coaching colleagues when leading within the health care environment (Unseen test)

Module information

* Leadership – motivation, personal power, using team skills, demonstrating trust, mentoring
* Management – delegation, prioritisation, team roles and responsibilities, resource management, change management
* Clinical governance – definition, impact, operation of clinical governance, examples from practice
* Health care policy and local impact – NSFs, NICE guidelines, current health policies and their implementation locally.
* Care, Compassion, Competence, Communication, Courage, Commitment

Learning and teaching methods

Students studying for the undergraduate and postgraduate pathways will study this module together. * Teaching – catalyst lectures will be delivered on key themes for the module to a mixed group of students * Learning – academic level specific tutorial groups will explore teaching content * On-Line Discussion – tutorial discussion will be followed by academic level differentiated on-line discussion groups. There will be asynchronous discussion between the level 6 student groups at Colchester and Southend campuses with a similar provision for the level 7 students * Moodle – the VLE will contain entry level content which will direct students to either Level 6 or Level 7 directed reading and support activities. There will be open access so Level 7 students primary reading can access the level 6 sections of Moodle and vice versa. * Outcomes – module outcomes are academic level specific * Assessment – the assessment strategy involves the same tasks but the level of critical ability required for successful completion will vary dependent on academic level.
