Module description

This module explores and examines the evidence around the concept of ongoing/enduring mental health problems and focuses on the skills and nursing care strategies in promoting recovery and wellbeing.

It takes into account the legal and ethical issues surrounding community and hospital care, with consideration to the lived experience of service users and carers.

A bio-psycho-social approach will be taken to ensure the student understands the nature of on-going mental health issues, causes and treatment options, based on the principles of recovery including physical health needs.

Module information

Students studying for the undergraduate and postgraduate pathways will study this module together. This module guide addresses only the BSc (L4) pathway.

Learning and teaching methods

Catalyst lectures will be delivered on key themes for the module to a mixed group of students Academic level specific tutorial groups will explore teaching content Tutorial discussion will be followed by academic level differentiated on-line discussion groups. There will be asynchronous discussion between the level 4 student groups at Colchester and Southend campuses with a similar provision for the level 7 students Moodle – the VLE will contain entry level content which will direct students to either Level 4 or Level 7 directed reading and support activities. There will be open access so Level 7 students primary reading can access the level 4 sections of Moodle and vice versa. Module outcomes are academic level specific The assessment strategy involves the same tasks but the level of critical ability required for successful completion will vary dependent on academic level. Lectures by module leads, other mental health lecturers and practitioners including input by service users and other external guest speakers with relevant expertise Skill training in breakaway technique is a mandatory requirement. Student cannot attend placement until this training has been completed There is allocated time within the module for independent/self-directed study Placement will follow the patient journeys and will include experiences by students in (in-patient) settings and in the community. Students will have two six weeks placements spanning terms 3 and 4. All mental health nursing students will be in mental health settings in term 3 and adult nursing settings in term 4 in that order. The focus of the placements will primarily but not exclusively be on the needs of people with ongoing mental and physical health care needs. Students will be required to draw from their placement experiences for the purpose of their assignments for this module (see under 'Assessment' below).The development of clinical practice skills will also be assessed during placement experiences ( see under 'Skills' below). Learning will be supported by on-line resources to which the student will have access on and off campus. Guided learning packages and resources are available on Moodle It is expected that you will meet with your personal tutor at least once during the module but further meetings can be arranged as necessary. Personal and group tutorials can and will also be arranged by the module lead as appropriate The development of skills alongside the acquisition of knowledge will occur within the workplace (See Placement) The development and assessment of clinical practice skills will be as defined in the Practice Assessment Document (Skills book). A range of skills will be continuously developed and assessed (formative and summative) based on the NMC skills clusters and Core Professional Values.
