BSC B939 Occupational Therapy

Module description

This module is designed to focus specifically on the practice and skills required for occupational therapy. You will draw on previous learning and undertake two practice placements, to further develop your understanding and apply skills in areas specific to occupational therapy practice.

Module aims

The aims of this module are:



  • To develop your knowledge and skills in practising occupational therapy. The interactive nature of the learning within this module will provide opportunities for you to apply your theoretical knowledge in developing evidence based occupational therapy skills and practice.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of this module, students should be able to:



  1. Evaluate sources of knowledge, evidence and information for practice in a specific setting (PP- Initiate). 

  2. Use critical reflection and professional reasoning to guide the occupational therapy process and develop own practice for the benefit of service users, carers and the service as a whole (PP- Initiate).

  3. Select apply and evaluate appropriate actions to initiate occupational therapy in a specific setting (PP- Initiate).

  4. Select and analyse appropriate methods to identify occupational strengths and needs, using activity analysis, observation, communication skills to examine occupational abilities and barriers (skills portfolio).

  5. Assess, prescribe, and facilitate use of equipment, assistive technology, and environmental adaptations to enhance occupational function (skills portfolio). 

  6. Critically analyse the setting for occupational therapy from a range of relevant perspectives (PP-Lead).

  7. Critically appraise and evaluate the scope for evidence-based practice (PP-Lead).

  8. Evaluate the effectiveness of leadership for service improvement (PP-Lead).

Learning and teaching methods

Overview:
Continuing with the developmental approach of the programme, within this module you will draw upon knowledge, understanding and experiences gained from previous learning and placement experiences, in order to further develop your occupational therapy practice skills. This module will provide opportunities for occupational therapists and service users to share their knowledge and experiences relating to aspects of occupational therapy. The interactive nature of this module is supported by practice placements, simulation/practical skills training and small group work, tutorials and seminars which will form the basis of the learning methods within this module.

Lectures:
Occupational therapists and service users will contribute to the learning within this module in a negotiated teaching and learning style.

Independent:
Drawing on your previous module experiences, you will explore content supported by student-led small groups and individual study.

Placement:
You will draw upon experiences and learning gained on placement in order to further develop your understanding and core skills in occupational therapy.

Online:
Using a blended learning approach you will be expected to engage and contribute to online group activities and use of online library facilities. A module Moodle page will support your learning on this module. You will also be expected to explore and utilise the advances in technology within your occupational therapy practice.

Tutorials:
There will be opportunities for formative assessment tutorials.

Skills:
Throughout this module, you will draw on and extend your current knowledge and transferrable skills, in order to progress your occupational therapy identity and skills.
