Module description

This module will introduce you to the knowledge, skills and work based learning that will enable you to develop SLT specific professional reasoning skills around the identification and understanding of speech language and communication ability and difficulty across the lifespan, including aspects of multi professional investigation.

Module aims

This module aims to develop students’ ability to understand and identify communication ability and difficulty, alongside deepening understanding of the employment and policy contexts in which Speech and Language Therapists practice.

Module learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module, the learner should be able to:

Demonstrate embedding of the professional values expected of registrant Speech and Language Therapists

Demonstrate professional reasoning through analysis and evaluation of complex and often incomplete perceptual and instrumental data to identify Speech Language and Communication Needs across the lifespan

Identify Speech Language and Communication Needs, selecting and using formal and informal methods appropriate to individual clients

Analysis, synthesis and interpretation of findings and reporting in writing and in person to the Multi-Disciplinary Team, client, carers and interagency colleagues

Evaluate own professional strengths and weaknesses and plan for ongoing development

Overview:

Introduction to contexts of practice in University

Placement comprising 35 days will be offered in at least 2 different settings

University preparation and support

Learning and teaching methods

Taking a developmental approach to the programme, this second speech and language therapy placement module will combine preparation for the workplace led by University tutors and 35 days placement in varied locations, comprised of at least two placement experiences and representing across lifespan opportunities. Students will be placed within SLT teams in partner organisations representing the range of organisations in which SLTs are employed e.g. NHS, Not for Profit, Private practice, Education settings and Specialist settings.
