The module will incorporate learning around service users who are likely to present with developmental difficulties of speech, language and communication across the lifespan

Module aims

This module aims to develop understanding of observation, assessment and identification of developmental speech language and communication difficulties across the lifespan

Module learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module, the learner should be able to:

Demonstrate a critical understanding of the wide range of developmental difficulties which are, or lead to, speech language literacy and communication difficulties

Identify and evaluate the abilities and difficulties of individuals and relate these to anticipated development

Demonstrate critical understanding of the observation and assessment techniques available to Speech and Language Therapists to identify developmental speech language literacy and communication difficulties

Administer, score, interpret and evaluate key assessments in a practicum environment

Transcribe and analyse non-standard English and identify areas of ability and difficulty

Discuss the professional reasoning employed in making decisions relating to assessment choice and identification of difficulty and ability

Module information

This module is delivered one day per week in the latter half of the autumn and throughout the spring term via key note lectures, interactive lectures and workshops. You will be expected to actively participate in classroom activities, engage in learner led small groups and work independently to truly understand the content at a deep level. This will help enable you to experience the professional reasoning required to identify developmental speech language and communication difficulties.

Learning and teaching methods

Taking a developmental approach to the programme, this speech and language therapy module will build upon understanding of typical development from year one of the programme. The module will be delivered through a combination of key note lectures, interactive lectures, small group learner led workshops and individual study. The emphasis will be to develop understanding of the range of developmental speech language and communication difficulties which are experienced whilst also developing the skills and professional reasoning ability to identify individuals’ difficulties.
