This module explores themes in Colchester's history across the centuries. You will actively explore a wide range of primary sources including maps, trade directories and censuses in workshop based teaching. The module is structured around an individual research project: focusing upon a particular neighbourhood or theme, you will use directories to recreate shopping streets, censuses to see who lived where, and chart the growth of different industries. Instead of producing a traditional essay, you will learn to use blogging and online mapping tools to communicate your research in an accessible and engaging way. Student's research will feed directly into the development of a Historic Towns Atlas of Colchester.
