MSC N28612 International Hospitality Management

Module description

The purpose of this module is to develop students` ability to conduct and manage a piece of individual research in the context of the international hospitality industry.

Skills and knowledge will be developed through a piece of work that requires demonstrable expertise with academic and, potentially, business resources, research methodologies and personal communication skills.

It may also involve the development and interpretation of primary data.

Where possible, the module will build on the research proposal developed in the `Research Methods` module in the previous term and allow students to implement their proposals.

The module aims to develop students` ability to conduct and manage a piece of individual research in the context of the international hospitality industry.

Module learning outcomes

At the conclusion of this module you should be able to:

1. Plan and design a significant piece of research that demonstrates a critical awareness of a topic associated with the international hospitality industry
2. Generate and deliver to appropriate feasible research objectives.
3. Critically review the literature relevant to the area of investigation
4. Select and justify a research methodology, and apply appropriate research skills in order to critically assess and evaluate the relevant data
5. Draw conclusions and make recommendations related to the presented analysis.

3. Undertaking a literature review
4. Selection or modification ofresearch methods and techniques.
5. Discipline specific research considerations and issues.
6. Testing for reliability and validity and analysis of data sets.
7. Critically evaluating and interpreting data and synthesis of conclusions.
8. Effective dissertation writing.

Learning and teaching methods

The initial, structured, delivery of this module will be of two 3-hour workshops in each of the first three weeks of term. Students will be expected to prepare materials and read the guided reading prior to these workshop sessions. A majority of the development work will be focussed on the individual topic that the student is proposing to undertake. Following the structured component, delivery will be through individual contact with academic supervisors. Initially, group workshops will be used to support the development of the research where after individual tutors will be allocated so as to provide individualised and bespoke direction and guidance for the implementation and completion of the work.
