Module description

The module will critically examine a number of contemporary issues that relate to the international hospitality industry and will utilise theory and insights from a range of academic perspectives including macro and micro economics, business studies, sociology and psychology.

Due to its interdisciplinary approach, students will be expected to complete the wide range of guided reading so as to be able to engage actively in seminars and workshops.

Module aims

This module aims to provide students with sufficient grounding to understand the current dynamics and major influencing factors across the international hospitality industry.

Module learning outcomes

On completion of this module students should be able to :

1. Evaluate the significance, impactand contribution oftourism andtheinternational hospitality industry in different locations around the world;
2. Understand and critically evaluate a range of issues related to and affecting the international hospitality industry;
3. Critically evaluate the strategic plans of selected major organisations within the international hospitality industry;
4. Develop a critical understanding of the significantissues which impact on a self-selected international market;
5. Demonstratean ability to access and use a range of suitable contemporary industry resources so as to research organisational and industry phenomena

Indicative Content

1. Towards a multi-disciplinary and international definition of the concept of `Hospitality' and Hospitality Management`
2. The international tourism industry and the economic and social contributionof the internationalhospitality industry
3. Global trends in customer expectations and needs

Following the delivery of the above initial sessions, it is anticipated that lectures will be drawn from contemporary issues relevant at the time. These will be supported by industry contextualised reading.

Examples of the potential titles and subject areas may include:

- Ecological sustainability and the international hospitality industry
- The impact of information technologyon the international hospitality industry
- Customer expectations of hospitality : the needs and wants of different generational consumer groups
- Global emerging markets
- Innovations or threats? The impacts of Trip Advisor, OTA's, AirBnB and Pokemon Go or other current concepts on the international hospitality industry.
- Financial management, revenue management and big data
- Construction costs and sources of financial investment : the changing growth strategies of multinational hotel organisations
- Talent recruitment, development and retention: a response to the diminishing skilled labour market in the international hospitality industry?
- Developments in the implementation of enhanced service quality in the international hospitality industry
- Entrepreneurshipa nd SME development in the international hospitality industry
- Food provenance, genetic modification and health issues in the international hospitality industry.

Learning and teaching methods

The module will be delivered over a 10 week period.There will be a threehour sessioneach week comprising a one and a half hour lecture and a one and a half hourseminar / workshop.Students will be expected to prepare materials and read the guided reading prior toboth the lectures and, in particular, the seminar /workshop sessions.Students will also be expected to attend appropriate field trips, the scheduled Masterclass sessions and the EHS Annual Student Conference. It is the intention of the academic team to encourage high levels of guided independent learning amongst this cohort. As a consequence students will not only be given access to the on-line learning resources of both EHS and the University, but this will also be supplemented by access to a number of specialist online resources provided via the professional bodies and associations of which EHS is a member (IOH; HOSPA; UKH; ITT etc).
