Module description

This module provides practical experience of project management, producing and event design. Students will work in pairs or as part of a group to produce a small arts festival or series of events as agreed with the module convenor.

Students will have to demonstrate an ability to secure a venue, programme an event, produce a marketing outline and manage a final project. Indicative projects could take the form of a live event, a series of events, a festival of filmed work, or a digital festival that happens in cyberspace.

Students may take on different aspects of the producing role within the same project, or across a number of projects, throughout the module. Additionally, students will undertake the role of a producer (either as an individual or in pairs) working on either a film or theatre collaboration with another course; the specifics of the project to which the producing student is seconded will be determined by the tutor/Head of Course.

Module aims

• Gain experience in the role of theatre and/or film producer working alongside a full creative team in support of a project.

Module learning outcomes

1. Demonstrate an understanding of the dynamic nature of the event and festival industry
2. Demonstrate the ability to organise, deliver and evaluate the impact of an arts festival
3. Demonstrate the ability to identify, deliver and evaluate appropriate technologies to support a specific event
4. Demonstrate the ability to work as a leader and a member of a small team
5. Demonstrate understanding the role of a theatre and/or film producer in working towards the success of a team project under the creative direction of another

Module information

This module will culminate in the creation of a public event, festival or series of events.

While the event/festival will need to culminate in a real event, the event itself will not be assessed. Assessment will take place through a portfolio that will include a log-book that documents the student’s process, and elements such as organizational plans, marketing strategy and evaluation of the event. This can be submitted in a traditional, written format or through creative use of media as agreed with the tutor.

The contribution of student producer towards the project to which they are seconded will be assessed through a viva; it is expected that students will keep a log book or portfolio to aid them in their viva
