BSC B991 Applied Biomedical Science (NHS placement)
The module will be delivered by attending a clinical placement of a minimum of 1600 hours over a 12 month period. During the placement you will spend time in all the specialities but usually focus on one or two. This will allow you to develop a good understanding of how all the disciplines work and will contribute greatly to your generic training experience.

The placement will comprise practical hands-on learning in the workplace as a Trainee Biomedical Scientist and a comprehensive Tutorial Programme (see below) delivered by the University Placement Links and the NHS Training Officers. The subject material of the tutorials is taken from the IBMS Portfolio. You will be expected to prepare for these in advance so that you are able to make a contribution. The sessions will be generic to facilitate the broadest possible learning opportunity to you. Invited specialists, for example hospital Human Resources or Data Protection staff, may speak at some tutorials.
There may be further tutorials with your Training Officer and/or the University Placement Link to monitor your progress. Opportunities to attend other talks and seminars should be taken to broaden your learning experience. You may be joined at these by other staff, for example those working towards the IBMS Specialist Portfolio.
Each week you will have a period allocated, which is usually half a day, for the private study associated with your placement. You are required to be on-site for this time and are expected to use it productively. You will be given access to the Trust Library and Learning Resources. Your weekly tutorial will also be on the same day whenever possible.
As a trainee in the clinical laboratory you will be expected to do work that contributes to the running of the laboratory. To achieve this you will follow specific training programmes to equip you with the basic skills in a wide variety of techniques.
