Module description

This module addresses a wide range of topical, critical management issues of relevance to the practice of business and management with the view to help you acquire the tools and the skills to develop innovative business thinking.


Typically led by the MBA Director, the Director's Workshops include contributions from the MBA Director, local and national industrial figures discussing their business and management practice, experts in their field and fellow MBA students themselves leading discussions on business issues specific to their own industry or geography. The Director's Workshops also aim to support you early on in your MBA studies, helping you acquire critical learning and study skills through writing workshops and other research and reporting techniques. The module also incorporates field and company visits, enabling you to evidence the relevance of your learning to the workplace environment.

Module aims

The aims of this module are



  1. To support you and your MBA study through a series of workshops revolving around communication skills, the understanding of the ‘self’ and your professional development.

  2. To enable you to evidence application of your MBA learning via effective verbal communication.

  3. To introduce you to topical issues in business and management not explicitly covered in other MBA modules.

  4.   To equip you with the tools and frameworks to contribute persuasively to innovative business thinking while addressing major issues in business and management.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:



  1. Apply techniques, models and frameworks to communicate verbally effectively and persuasively.

  2. Acquire and practice active listening skills.

  3. Enhance your understanding of real-life business dilemmas.

  4. Apply techniques, models and frameworks to enhance your CV.

    • How this learning is making you a better, and more effective manager and/or leader back in a workplace setting (or in your own business if you have one or intend to create your own venture).

  • Remote, open book: Your exam will take place remotely via an online learning platform. You may refer to any physical or electronic materials during the exam.
  • In-person, open book: Your exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may refer to any physical materials such as paper study notes or a textbook during the exam. Electronic devices may not be used in the exam.
  • In-person, open book (restricted): The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may refer only to specific physical materials such as a named textbook during the exam. Permitted materials will be specified by your department. Electronic devices may not be used in the exam.
  • In-person, closed book: The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may not refer to any physical materials or electronic devices during the exam. There may be times when a paper dictionary, for example, may be permitted in an otherwise closed book exam. Any exceptions will be specified by your department.
