Module description

Leadership is a critically important topic in the field of business and management studies both from a theoretical and a more practical perspective. The overarching objective of this module is to develop students' understanding and knowledge of leadership within contemporary organisations.

The module introduces students to a wide range of leadership approaches, assumptions, models, theories and topics, highlighting central debates and concerns in the field. The module will cover traditional approaches to leadership, current issues in leadership, and critical issues in leadership, incorporating both theoretical and more practical concerns. At the end of the module students will have developed a critical appreciation of many of the leadership challenges and opportunities which impact modern organisations.

Module aims

The main aims of the module are:

1. To provide students with an understanding of theories on leadership

2. To introduce students to the practice of leadership

3. To enable students to critically analyse leadership in organisations

Module learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate a clear understanding of key concerns found in a variety of leadership theories, approaches and concepts on leadership in organisations

2. Critically evaluate leadership concepts and practices

3. Independently analyse leadership opportunities and challenges in organisations.

By the end of the module, you will be able to:

1. Evaluate leadership issues from a range of perspectives and be able to integrate these into a considered and practical approach to leadership, management, and organisation

2. Think critically about leadership by discussing current case studies and academic articles

3. Develop your commercial awareness based on studying examples of current leadership practices

4. Reflect on your attitudes to leadership, e.g. based on your personal leadership learning log

5. Work effectively and efficiently in small teams (in classes)

6. Solve problems creatively and collaboratively

7. Reflect on your own future leadership practice

Learning and teaching methods

The module is normally delivered over an entire term. We will have two-hour lectures (weeks 16, 18, 20, 22, 24) and two-hour seminars (weeks 17, 19, 23, 25). We will have a reading week in week 21. In the lectures and seminars we are looking for active participation from you to create an inclusive, positive learning environment for everyone. Preparation for the lectures and classes is key. In academic year 2021-2022 the delivery may involve online learning.
