We Are Essex

Tom's story

BSc Business Management student Tom Sirman sits in the Winter Garden of the Essex Business School building

"There is always competition in my family but I’m pretty much always losing to my sister because she’s a doctor."

Competition inspires me. There is always competition in my family at home but I’m pretty much always losing to my sister because she’s a doctor.

There is also always competition between me and my brother to see who can achieve what. He is doing his A-Levels now and he’s doing a few similar ones to me so we are like, is he going to beat me?

But I’ve got to set the bar high for him.

Competition is always something that inspires me whatever it is. In an academic sense I need something to inspire me or I won’t do anything as I’m quite lazy naturally.

In the house I share with friends at Uni there is a lot of friendly competition which I think is healthy. Then again, we’ve got a friend who is doing BSc Economics and his lowest grade is a 75 so we’re always losing to him so it’s always a battle for second place.

Winning is always the best feeling to be fair there’s no two ways about it, it is the best feeling and I hate losing. I wouldn’t say anyone in particular inspires me because there’s no one like me. I’m my own person.
