IT account and password

All University students are provided with an Essex IT account that gives you access to a wide range of digital services.

Your password

Don't forget to update your password on all of your devices when you change it.

Manage your account

Your username and email address

  • Your username will look something like re16495. You can't change your username.
  • Your email address is your username with @essex.ac.uk after it, for example re16495@essex.ac.uk
  • PGR students can choose a preferred email address if you want something like firstname.surname@essex.ac.uk

Your multifactor authentication (MFA) settings

MFA helps to protect your IT account from unauthorised access.

If you're having problems logging in

  • If you've just changed your password, please wait a few minutes and try again, as it can sometimes take a short while to update.
  • Check IT service status to find out if the service is temporarily unavailable.
  • Your password might have expired - change your password to reactivate your account.
  • Try using a different username format to log in, for example if you tried username@essex.ac.uk, try just username.

Contact the IT Helpdesk if you're still having problems.

Not got your account yet?

The University will contact you by email or post to let you know when and how you can collect your IT account details. This usually happens shortly after your application has been processed and you have been accepted.

This email or letter contains your Personal Record Identifier (PRID) which you'll need to set up your account.

Once you have your PRID you can then set up your IT account.

If you haven't got this email and your start date is soon, contact your line manager.

Account closure when you leave

Your IT account will close 93 days after you officially leave the University.

After the 93 days, you will no longer be able to access University services, for example email or OneDrive, so there are some things you need to consider before this happens.

  • If you have important emails you want to keep, forward them to your personal email address.
  • Backup your work and files to personal storage.
  • Your free subscription to Office 365 will end your IT account closes.

Regulations

By using your IT account, you are agreeing to the IT Acceptable Use Policy.
