Health and Safety Group and Sub-Committees

The University has a Health and Safety Group and specialist sub-groups (covering ionising radiation and biological safety) through which consultation on matters that affect the University as a whole takes place.

Health and Safety Group

The Health and Safety Group is an advisory committee which supports University Steering Group (USG) in overseeing the implementation of the University's Health and Safety Policy and Plan.

Sub-committees

The following Sub-committees also report to the Health and Safety Group:

Estate Management Section Health and Safety Sub-Group; The purpose of this group is to Support the Director of Estates and Campus Services in discharging his responsibilities for ensuring:

  1. Compliance with health and safety legislation relating to buildings, grounds and services the health and safety of EMS staff the provision and maintenance of buildings and grounds that are safe and fit for purpose for users of and visitors to the University Estate.
  2. Keep under review arrangements for health and safety compliance in the Estate Management Section.
  3. To monitor and report on the health and safety performance of the Estate Management Section.
  4. To provide a forum for consultation with EMS staff and their representatives on matters that affect the health and safety of EMS staff.

Ionising Radiation Protection Sub-Group supervises the use of ionising radiation and radioactive substance in the University and to ensure that the provisions in the codes of practice for the protection of persons exposed to such radiations in research and teaching and of the University's local rules are carried out. Biological Hazards and Genetic Modification Protection Safety Sub-Group supervises the work involving biological hazards and genetic manipulation within the University and ensures the provisions of Codes of Practice and local rules for such work are complied with and approve genetic manipulation projects and prepare reports as required by the Health and Safety Executive Advisory Committee on Genetic Manipulation. Health and Safety plans

Health and Safety Group monitors the implementation of the University's Health and Safety plan on behalf of USG.
