The Psychology Department at Essex provides a vibrant and dynamic study and research environment. Research in the department was confirmed as being of top-class international quality in the recent Research Assessment Exercise (see RAE 2008 results), with over half of our research defined as either 4* (i.e., “world-leading in terms of originality, significance and rigour”) or 3* (i.e., “internationally excellent in terms of originality, significance and rigour”). A new Centre for Brain Science (CBS) was built in 2008 that houses state-of-the-art facilities for measuring brain activity (e.g., EEG and ERP work, Near Infra-red spectroscopy (NIRS), Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), eye-tracking and general psychophysiological measurement). Several other purpose built computing and experimental laboratories give students at Essex the opportunity to learn cutting-edge research techniques in Psychology and Cognitive Neuroscience. Particuar expertise exists in the areas of cognitive psychology, emotion science, neuropsychology,, language, health and social issues, and perception (vision, and hearing). The quality of our teaching is also top-class with a rating of 22 out of a maximum of 24 in the last Teaching Quality Assessment. There are opportunities to study Psychology at Essex at every level from Undergraduate to PhD.
