The Department of Economics has a reputation among its students and academics for being a lively, enjoyable and stimulating place to study and work.

We maintain a world-class reputation for teaching and research in Economics. Our research is internationally recognised and places the department joint third in the UK in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise. Members of staff specialise in a wide range of theoretical and applied economics and many are leaders in their fields.

As part of the Economics and Social Research Council (ESRC) doctoral training centre we are offering up to six fully-funded studentships to UK and EU students looking to study economics. There are also eight fully-funded studentships for those working in advanced quantitative methods. The University of Essex Social Science Research Scholarship offers UK, EU and Overseas PhD students a selection of research and teaching awards.
