At Essex, we take philosophy back to its roots in everyday existential, social, and political problems. Mathematics at Essex is not what you would expect and has a genuinely broad reach; from exploring the economic impact of the social networks of cows, to the mathematical modelling of brain evolution to improve patient care – our research explores issues of global importance. Mathematics is the language that underpins the rest of science.

Studying economics provides you with a greater understanding of the world around you. It teaches you how the economy functions, how people make decisions, why an economic crisis occurs and what the different solutions are.

From cancer-screening to blood transfusions, from infections to genetic diseases, biomedical scientists research the causes and diagnosis of diseases and the effectiveness of the medicines that cure them. Our multidisciplinary approach means you learn skills that are at the forefront of advances in medical research.

Technology drives society, and computer science is developing faster than ever before. Social media, cloud computing, face recognition software, network security and robotics all have a basis in computing.

At Essex, you will acquire a broad foundation in the history of visual culture, both by learning about canonical forms of art and architecture and by discovering what has been overlooked or marginalised, such as medical photography, tattoos or objects from political protests. You will also develop the skills you need to make exciting new connections between the forms of visual culture you study, developments in other disciplines, and broader social and political forces.
