Research fees for current students

This page outlines fees and fee rules for current year students, including those continuing on a course of study in a subsequent year. If you'll be starting a new postgraduate research course at Essex for the first time in 2023-2024, please refer to our applicant pages for fee information.

Current year fees

The fee bands and rates for new postgraduate research students studying in 2022-2023 academic year are listed below.

Please be aware that these are the general fee bands covering the majority of courses however there are some exceptions in Health and Social Care, Psychosocial and Psychoanalytic Studies and Sport, Rehabilitation and Exercise Sciences. Completion and extension fees

For all subject areas and all fee status categories

Description Fee
Completion (up to three terms) £250 per term
Further Completion for students first registered prior to 2008-09 (up to three terms) £500 per term
Exceptional extension to maximum period, following Completion period, for students first registered from 2008-09 £500 per term
Extension fee for Doctorate in Clinical Psychology Part-time fees per term
PhD re-examination or re-submission* £200

*In addition to the re-examination fee, you will also be liable for the appropriate registration fee for the referral period. In most cases, this will be the ‘exceptional extension to maximum period’ fee (per term). However, if you originally submitted your thesis without using the maximum three terms of ‘completion period’ available to you, you will first be registered for the remainder of your ‘completion period’ term(s) followed by the ‘exceptional extension to maximum period’ for the rest of your referral period. Details of the fees for these periods of study are outlined above.

Returning year fees

Students returning for a second or subsequent year of study will be notified of their tuition fees for the next year of study as part of the arrangements for Registration.

Annual fee changes

For continuing postgraduate research students who started in 2017-18 or earlier, your fees will increase by 3% for each academic year of study.

For continuing postgraduate research students who started in 2018-19 or later, your fees will increase by 5% for each academic year of study.
