Paternity leave and pay

Eligibility for paternity leave and pay is dependent on length of service.

  • Employees with at least 26 weeks’ service by the end of the 15th week before the expected week of childbirth (matching week in the case of adoption) are entitled to two weeks’ Paternity Leave and Statutory Paternity Pay.
  • Occupational Paternity Pay (OPP) is an enhanced pay provision provided by the University and is inclusive of any statutory pay. To qualify for OPP you must have been employed continuously with the University for a minimum period of 12 months before the EWC or the adoption of your child.

What you need to do as a parent

  • Book a meeting with HR (email staffing@essex.ac.uk) as early as possible to talk about your plans / benefits / entitlements.
  • Complete a paternity leave application form (.pdf) together with a copy of the original MATB1 / matching certificate given to you by your partner’s midwife / GP / adoption agency.
  • If the baby comes early and you were therefore unable to give the required notice, you need to inform People and Culture and your line manager as soon as possible.
  • If the baby comes late, you must delay the start of your paternity leave or take the leave from the birth of the baby. Leave cannot start before the birth. Notify People and Culture and your line manager as soon as possible.

What do managers need to do?

  • Make sure you are aware of the Family Leave Policy (.pdf) and what is required in terms of documentation at different points.
