National Careers Week

4-9 March 2024 is National Careers Week. You can access our bank of recorded sessions from our academic departments to support students in exploring Higher Education, employability and career opportunities, during this week, as well as attend our Education Fair.

Please note that our events below have now passed and bookings are closed. We will be planning our activities for next year soon and will update this page accordingly.

At Essex we know that employability is an important factor for students in deciding their future, and their Higher Education choices. This year, we have lots of information and activity to help your students with their HE options and routes into different careers and will be offering activity in a few ways to help you and your students make the most of National Careers Week 2024.

Education Fair

As part of National Careers Week, we are hosting our Education Fair on 6 March 2024. This is a great opportunity for your students to find out what it's like to work in education, how to get into the sector and meet employers. This fair will also give an insight into other opportunities and careers that your students may not have realised existed that could help them to develop their transferable skills or be inspired to take a career path they had not considered! 

We will be hosting a welcome talk ahead of the fair where you can find out more about the University of Essex, our offering and how we support our students to reach their future career goals. The programme for the day can be found below:

We are excited to offer a Taster Day Bursary for school groups attending this event!* School groups bringing 10 or more post-16 students can claim up to £150 towards their travel expenses. 

*Please note, this offer is not available in conjunction with the Schools Membership travel bursary. 

Hidden Gems Webinar Series

Are you still not sure what to study? Explore new options through our Hidden Gems webinar series – discover our unique courses that you have probably never considered before. Experience the course through a mini taster session and find out what careers this course might lead you to – you will be surprised! 

Some examples of the topics covered in our series include: 

  • Is the world becoming more conflictual?
  • Marine pollution – what is killing our seas?
  • Trauma and Mental Health – psychodynamic approach as an effective alternative to psychology

Bespoke talks with our academic departments

Delivered by our enthusiastic academics, our taster sessions are designed to give your students a flavour of studying a subject at undergraduate level and incorporate careers and employability within the field of study. Workshops are available across all three of our faculties and can be delivered as part of a campus visit or virtually via Zoom or Microsoft Teams to your classrooms.

Bespoke campus visits

Explore our Colchester campus and our facilities for a bespoke campus visit. Your visit can include a range of talks delivered to your students including Employability and Support at Essex and academic careers talks, such as 'A career in Psychosocial and Psychoanalytic Studies' or 'A career in Sports, Rehabilitation and Exercise Sciences.' Our careers service offers students a wealth of support to jump-start their career. We include career-focused modules across all our degrees and provide mentoring opportunities for all students, as well as hosting events and industry network building sessions.
