Student life

Our largest campus is located just outside the historic city of Colchester, which is an hour away from London. It's a vibrant and international campus, with a range of services within the safety of a parkland location. Our smaller campus in Southend brings together a central city location and the best of British seaside life, and our East 15 Acting School campus in Loughton is a purpose-built haven just 30 minutes from Central London. Find out more about life on our three campuses.

At Essex, we encourage students to get involved inside and outside of the classroom. Whether that's joining our Model UN society, learning a new language, playing sport or getting a part time job, there's lots of opportunities to develop your skills, meet people and start new, or continue existing interests. See our range of societies and sports clubs.

Considering where you could live is an important factor when choosing that university to be 'home'. In Colchester, we have a range of accommodation to suit your budget and needs, all within walking distance to campus. Even better - it's guaranteed for international students, and for the duration of your course if undergraduate.

Studying law at Essex

Our law programmes

LLB Law (Senior Status)

This two-year fast-track course was designed for students who have graduated from another discipline and want to pursue a career in law. For further information about the course contents, please visit the course page.

LLB Law

We also offer the three-year LLB Law option which allows students to take additional optional modules, or specialise in a specific field by combining your law degree with another subject. The following programmes are available:

LLB English and French Law (Licence)

For students fluent in both English and French, our  LLB English and French Law (Licence) 'double degree' combines two years at Essex with a final year at one of our partner universities in France.

Masters degrees

We also offer a range of one-year Masters degrees in the areas of Law and Human Rights.

Returning to Canada after your studies

If you plan on heading back to Canada to work after gaining your degree in the UK, you'll need to demonstrate competence to the National Committee on Accreditation (NCA), who assess the qualifications of anyone with legal qualifications obtained outside of Canada, and who wish to be admitted to a common law bar in Canada.

If you graduate from your LLB Law (Senior Status) with a 2:2 (50%) or above, without any of your modules graded below 50% (roughly a C average in a Canadian university), you'll normally have to take seven extra exams. Then, once you've successfully completed the NCA requirements, you'll be awarded a Certificate of Qualification, accepted by most Canadian law societies for entry to their bar admissions process. Please note that this information is only provided as a guideline, for further information please contact the NCA:

Hear from our Canadian students and alumni

Arran Chambers
My name is Arran and I am studying a Masters in Psychology here at the University of Essex. I chose Essex because they offer this conversion masters which opens the door to me as a Kinesiology graduate to pursue something completely different! I love the campus and people at Essex. Being close to nature and walking through it every day keeps me feeling invigorated. The way campus is set up also allows for such good socializing in the centre campus squares which I love. I am a part of the Volleyball club here and have met some awesome people involved in all the sports at Essex.
Arran Chambers MSC Psychology
Everyone in the university community is extremely helpful and very friendly. The community really embraces everyone from around the world and provides any support needed. Studying at Essex was an amazing experience because of the people and the support you receive for your studies. I am currently in the process of applying to a few Canadian universities for my Master in Common Law thanks to my 2:1 degree from the University of Essex.
Jaspreet Dhaliwal LLB Law
I was able to study alongside students from a wide variety of backgrounds and disciplines. I learned from students who came from backgrounds in politics, policing, the military, and others. I am confident that my studies abroad greatly contributed to my understanding of complex political conflicts and situations. My professors were all deeply committed to human rights and humanitarian law, and they were active practitioners in the field. They helped me to understand the realities of working in areas of conflict and elevated my comprehension of human rights and humanitarian law from the perspective of victims and survivors. My fellow students, who came from all over the world, inspired me to dream big and push beyond myself. Studying at the University of Essex gave me access to a global network of inspiring human rights advocates around the world. No matter what country I landed in, I knew that I would be able to connect with either a former student colleague of mine or someone within the alumni network.
LLM INTERNATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS AND HUMANITARIAN LAW. HEAD OF PROTECTION OF CIVILIANS AND CHILD PROTECTION FOR THE UN ASSISTANCE MISSION IN AFGHANISTAN, PRESIDENT AND FOUNDER OF "FREE TO RUN".
