Undergraduate

Most of our Undergraduate Bachelor degree courses will consider 75% from Canadian Secondary School Certificate/Diploma or DEC. Some courses have subject requirements too.

Our LLB Law (Senior Status) will consider GPA 2.9 or equivalent from Bachelor degree.

Postgraduate Taught

Many of our Postgraduate Taught Masters will consider applicants with a minimum B average or GPA 2.7/4 or equivalent from a Canadian Bachelor degree. Some courses and departments may have higher or additional entry criteria, please check the details for the course you are interested in under the course listings.

Postgraduate Research 

For entry to Research degrees, please refer to the entry requirements for the degree that you are interested in. 

An undergraduate degree equivalent to a UK 2:2 (see the grade information above), and a master's degree with a good grade is required for most PhD programmes, in addition to a well-developed research proposal in a field in which we can offer supervision. Please have a read through our information for research degree applicants and check the course details for your chosen programme for further information about entry criteria.

Our Academic Excellence Senior Status Law Scholarship scheme offers scholarships worth £3,000 to international students joining the LLB Law (Senior Status) programme. 

Our Academic Excellence International Masters Scholarship scheme offers a £3,000 tuition fee discount to masters students from Canada achieving the equivalent of a UK first in their undergraduate degree.

Our Vice-Chancellor's Global Talent Scholarship is a competitive scholarship offering successful candidates a 50% tuition fee discount on their tuition fees for the first year of study. The Essex Global Partner Scholarship offers a 20% tuition fee discount for each year of enrolment at Essex for students joining us from University of Waterloo/United College.

Our largest campus is located just outside the historic city of Colchester, which is an hour away from London. LLB English and French Law (Licence)

For students fluent in both English and French, our  LLB English and French Law (Licence) 'double degree' combines two years at Essex with a final year at one of our partner universities in France.

Masters degrees

We also offer a range of one-year Masters degrees in the areas of Law and Human Rights.

If you plan on heading back to Canada to work after gaining your degree in the UK, you'll need to demonstrate competence to the National Committee on Accreditation (NCA), who assess the qualifications of anyone with legal qualifications obtained outside of Canada, and who wish to be admitted to a common law bar in Canada.

If you graduate from your LLB Law (Senior Status) with a 2:2 (50%) or above, without any of your modules graded below 50% (roughly a C average in a Canadian university), you'll normally have to take seven extra exams. Then, once you've successfully completed the NCA requirements, you'll be awarded a Certificate of Qualification, accepted by most Canadian law societies for entry to their bar admissions process.
