In our next THINK debate we want to discuss the difficult issue of sexual assault. The goal? To have an honest conversation about consent, victim-blaming and rape culture, questioning the way we think about this issue and finding ways to tackle it. At the event, we will hear from Tom Stranger. He committed sexual assault at the age of 18 against his girlfriend. We are inviting Tom to speak with us, via live video link, to learn from his experience and challenge the sense of ‘entitlement’ he, and others, may have felt towards another person’s body. We will be joined on the stage by other guest speakers who will also share their experience and answer your questions. (Full line-up below). Join us for this important discussion where we'll challenge victim blaming head-on and highlight the real issue: whether friend or foe, no means no.

SPEAKERS

1.TOM STRANGER 23 years ago, at the age of 18, Tom raped his girlfriend, Thordis Elva, after a party they had both attended. Tom will share his story to put a spotlight on male responsibility. More widely, his experience will allow us to reflect on harmful gender stereotypes and how these can contribute to sexual assault. In 2016 Tom contributed to a TED talk with Thordis, and they published a book about their experience titled South of Forgiveness. Watch their TED talk here: http://bit.ly/TomStrangerTEDTALK

2. CIARA LALLY Director of Revolt Sexual Assault, a new national campaign working to expose the real nature and extent of sexual assault and harassment experienced by students at UK universities.

3. BRYONY RICKARD International Relations final year student and president of the University of Essex Feminist Society.

4. TARAN BARAGWANATH University of Essex Students' Union - Colchester Vice President Welfare and Community will be on stage during the event to take part in the q&a.

SUPPORT There will be a support room available during and after the event, managed by the University’s wellbeing team.
