Essex Business School is a place where staff and students recognise each other as valued members of our department and wider community.

We work together with mutual respect and integrity. We value a working and learning environment in which people are free to be themselves. The School respects the multi-dimensional lives of all its members and is committed to creating and supporting a learning and working environment in which staff and students can flourish in all aspects of their work and lives.

Athena SWAN

Essex Business School is Athena SWAN Bronze award accredited and we are working towards the Athena SWAN Silver Departmental Award.

The application will drive structural and cultural progress towards ensuring that Essex Business School is a gender equal working and learning environment for all staff, students and visitors.

As part of the application process, we have drawn up an action plan to ensure that championing gender equality is at the heart of our research, teaching and professional practice.

The Equality Challenge Unit (ECU) champions equality in higher education. It operates the Athena SWAN Charter to recognise work that addresses gender equality in a range of subjects within higher education, including business and the social sciences. It enables universities and departments to apply for awards that recognise their work on championing equality.

Our Athena SWAN self-assessment team prepared our application for the Bronze award and is working on our Silver award application. The team is united by their expertise, interests and experience.

"The Athena SWAN process has raised awareness of the breadth and depth of gender research conducted across the School and has encouraged us to establish a new research cluster on Gender and Work and launch the inclusivity focussed COVER research centre. Through showcasing our research in this area we hope to build new collaborations with business and community groups, and develop our students as gender-aware future business leaders."

COVER research centre

The Centre for Commons Organising, Values Equalities and Resilience (COVER) studies the theoretical and practical possibilities of how commons values based on principles of cooperation, collaboration, and open knowledge sharing can foster more egalitarian, inclusive, and participative 21st-century economies, communities, and organisations.
