Our £619.5 million impact

We contribute £619.5m to the UK economy.

Universities are fundamental to the UK’s economic growth, and the University of Essex is playing its part in driving innovation and economic growth in the Eastern region.

In 2020-21, our overall economic impact was £619.5m, up 4.7%.

Research income generated in 2020-21 was £28.1m and our income from business and community engagement was £25.7m.

Our student numbers grew by 9.4% to 19,669* with our students' contribution to the regional economy growing to £81.1m.

Our work directly creates 2,644 jobs and a further 3,807 jobs across the region.

Colchester Campus

  • Economic impact - £538.9 million.
  • Students' contribution to the economy - £72.2 million.
  • Provides 2,437 jobs and indirectly supports a further 3,509 jobs.

Since launching in 2019, Our University Enterprise Zone, Colchester Campus has:

  • created 337 jobs
  • raised nearly £20m in investment.
  • supported 355 businesses and
  • connected 60 innovators with investors. 

Southend Campus

  • Economic impact - £61.9 million.
  • Students' contribution to the economy - £6.8 million.
  • Provides 147 jobs and indirectly supports a further 212 jobs.

* Headcount for university delivered courses at our three campuses in Colchester, Loughton and Southend including University of Essex International College, a partnership with Kaplan International Pathways based on our Colchester Campus.
