I’ve been working as an Apprentice Administrator since September 2023. I’m part of the office reception in the Research and Enterprise Office so I help provide reception services and administrative support to the department and generally helping out around the office. I also handle booking travel and accommodation for staff and assist with the handling of requisitions. My team are also the first point of contact for all external callers, staff, and visitors.

Prior to my apprenticeship I studied at the Colchester Sixth Form College. I am now on a Level 3 Business Administration apprenticeship, with the training and assessment being provided by Colchester Institute. My programme lasts until mid-2025, so I have quite a way to go yet!

After finishing my A-Levels, studying at a university didn't appeal to me, but I was concerned about how well I'd be able to advance if I took a basic post-sixth form job, so I decided to do an apprenticeship. Apprenticeships offer the best of both academia and regular employment; practical experience, paid work, "getting one's name out there", and a qualification at the end of it, too.

My apprenticeship has given me practical hands-on experience in addition to the tuition-based theoretical education in this field, but it’s also allowed me to network, make connections, and grow as a person. The most rewarding part so far has been being told that my work had been greatly appreciated and was of a high standard. The team I work with are wonderful people and it means everything to have my efforts as a part of that team be appreciated and valued.

I really think that all these experiences will help me to progress in my career, and I would definitely recommend doing an apprenticeship if you are thinking of doing one. However, my advice would be to do your research thoroughly to ensure you find the right course for you.
